IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Winifred Margaret
Hughes
May 15, 1932 – June 2, 2023
Winifred M. Hughes of the Village of Laurel Hollow, NY, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-
grandmother, daughter, sister, aunt, and friend passed peacefully away on Friday, June 2, 2023 with
her loving family at her bedside.
"Winnie," as she was affectionately known to her family and friends, was born in New York City on
May 15, 1932 to the late Delia (née Carney) and Patrick Kilduff, of County Mayo, Ireland. Winnie
grew up in a bustling Irish Catholic household filled with love and laughter relishing the camaraderie
of her 6 brothers and 4 sisters.
In her senior year of high school, Winnie fell in love with Joe, a handsome young man from Cardinal
Hayes High School in the Bronx. The two became inseparable spending lots of time sipping sodas at
the corner drugstore. In 1954, they married and within a few years moved to Long Island where
they raised their five children.
Winnie enjoyed traveling to Europe, Disney World, "The Lake" and on cruises to Bermuda with her
family. In her late-forties she learned to ski and spent many winters skiing on the slopes of Stratton,
VT and Windham, NY. Winnie was also a long-time member of the Mill River Club in Brookville, NY,
The Club at Admirals Cove in Jupiter, FL and The Country Club at Mirasol in Palm Beach Gardens, FL
where she enjoyed playing golf, cards and sailing adventures with her husband Joe and their close-
knit circle of friends.
Deeply devoted to her faith, Winnie was an active member of various parishes throughout her life,
including St. Dominic RC Church in Oyster Bay, NY, Holy Name of Jesus RC Church in Woodbury, NY,
St. Peter RC Church in Jupiter, FL, Holy Family RC Church in Hicksville, NY and St. Luke RC Church in
the Bronx, NY. She was known for her generosity contributing to numerous Catholic Charities.
After spending a brief stint as a licensed real estate salesperson, she developed a second vocation as
an untiring advocate for the unborn, which included being a staunch supporter of the New York
State Right to Life Party, which lobbied state lawmakers on behalf of the unborn. She remained
dedicated to this cause for the remainder of her life.
Winnie is preceded in death by her loving husband of 69 years, Joseph F. Hughes and is survived by
her brother Joseph, her sister Regina Lennon, her sister-in-law Ann Marie Kilduff, her adored
children: Patrick and his wife Jana; James and his wife Ellen; Regina Dowd and her husband Michael;
Christopher and his wife Inger Falco; Lisa Marie Hughes. Additionally, she will be deeply missed by

Jennifer (Gregory), Brian (Patricia), Jared (Sarah), James (Kristina), Kelly, Ryan, Kevin, and her
adorable great-grandchildren: Henry, Muriel, Katherine, Claire, Aidan, Shannon, Sverre Mikkel
Knutson, and Ophelia; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom she held
dear.

(Bernadette), Patrick (Margaret), Thomas, Gerald, sisters Mary Carton (Thomas), Joan, Veronica
