Obituary

William Henry Lewis, Jr. of Locust Valley, NY, died peacefully in Glen Cove, NY on February 19, 2021, after a short illness. Bill, as he was commonly known, was born on November 2, 1928 in Newport, Rhode Island, the son of William Henry Lewis, Sr. and Louise Whitman Lewis. As a young man, he began working in the hospitality industry in his hometown of Newport and Palm Beach, Florida, alternating between the two seasonally. In 1949, he accepted an opportunity to work at The Creek Club of Locust Valley, New York. Shortly beginning that job, he met Anne Celine Chardenet, his future wife of 68 years. In 1950, shortly after the onset of the Korean War, Bill entered the U.S. Army, serving in the 29 th and 57 th Tank Battalions. Bill and Anne were married at Fort Hood, Texas in 1951, where he served briefly before being assigned to Baumholder Army Base in the German Rhineland, near Mannheim and Wiesbaden. Bill and Anne traveled extensively in Europe during their time there. Bill achieved the rank of Sergeant before his discharge in 1952. After leaving the Army, Bill and Anne returned to Locust Valley. He resumed his position at The Creek during the warmer months but continued to work in Palm Beach during the winter until 1958, when he became an assistant general manager at The Creek. In late 1963, he was appointed General Manager of The Creek, a position he would hold for 36 years, until his retirement in 1999. During his long tenure, he smoothly and graciously handled the demands of running a large and varied organization, earning tributes from both members and employees. In addition to his work and his family, Bill's Interests included carpentry, woodworking, travel and outdoor activities, particularly skiing. Although he gave up the ski slopes in his seventies, he turned to hiking and biking and pursued those until his final years. Bill also enjoyed watching sports, particularly the New York Mets and the University of Connecticut Lady Huskies. Bill was renowned for his genial good nature, politeness and unflappable good manners. While a man of few words, he enjoyed large parties and more intimate gatherings, and was a wonderful host. For many years he and Anne welcomed large numbers of guests to a legendary Christmas Eve open house, where conversation and spirits freely flowed. His family also fondly remember his holiday confections, including superb Baked Alaska and Crepes Suzette. Bill is survived by his daughters Joanne Whitman Lewis of Billerica, MA and Susan Lewis Shehan and her husband James Shehan of New York City and Roxbury, CT, his three grandchildren Oliva Whitman Shehan, Caroline Taylor Shehan and Charles Lewis Shehan, and his younger sister Beryl Johnson and her husband Andrew. He was predeceased by his sister Barbara Angel. Bill's family is planning a memorial service later in the year, when COVID-19 related restrictions have eased. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to the Grenville Baker Boys & Girls Club, https://gbbgc.org/, or the Locust Valley Fire Department, https://locustvalleyfd.com/.
