Virginia Harper Martin
Virginia Harper Martin
, 87, a longtime resident of Oyster Bay, passed away on December 15, 2013 in the loving arms of her daughters.
Virginia was born in Brooklyn on August 19, 1926 and was the daughter of the late Frank and Helene Crane. Virginia spent her early childhood in Brooklyn where she spent time watching the Brooklyn Dodgers play at the polo grounds. Her love of baseball followed her through her life and she was an avid Yankee fan and could provide you with every team statistic. If she was not watching the game on TV she would be listening to it on her radio.
Virginia had a very strong faith and was an active member of Saint Dominic Church in Oyster Bay where she attended mass weekly. She was an extremely kind and gentle person and a lover of literature. She could be found at the Oyster Bay Public Library several days a week. Virginia did not text or email, but you could always count on a phone call from her, or a letter or card, filled with sweet and kind words for any occasion.
The perfect day for Virginia would include a good cup of coffee, attending mass at her beloved St. Dominic's, a call or visit with family, watching the Yankees beat the Red Sox, and reading a great book while having her bowl of mint chocolate chip ice cream. Her presence, grace and warm smile will be missed by all who knew her.
Virginia loved her family and cherished time with her sisters, her children and her grandchildren. She is survived by two sisters, Jacqueline Crane and Ruth Balmer, as well as her five children: David Kilmartin, Christine Virginia Martin, Paul Martin and his wife Nina, Mary Louise Martin, and Keith Martin and his wife Lynda; as well as 4 grandchildren, Jack, Patrick, Allie and Spencer, and several loving nephews and nieces.
