Steven G. Williams passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on October 10, 2026, at age 74, following a battle with cancer stemming from his official deployment with the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) in support of rescue and recovery operations at Ground Zero.
Steve’s life was a testament to resilience, service, and self-improvement. Born in the Bronx, New York, in June 1952, to a New York City firefighter and a nurse, he was tragically orphaned at age seven. He and his brothers were placed in an orphanage and eventually entered foster care with the Calleia family of Oyster Bay.
Steve graduated from Saint Dominic High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Long Island University (LIU), working full-time as a custodian at night while attending classes during the day. He later earned a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from LIU through a U.S. Department of Justice grant.
Law enforcement was Steve’s career, vocation, and community. He began his career at 21 with the Oyster Bay Cove Police Department and joined the NCPD in 1977, rising to the rank of Inspector before retiring in 2010. Drawing on his own transformative journey, Steve believed deeply in the advancement of law enforcement as a profession. He served as President of the American Academy for Professional Law Enforcement’s Long Island Chapter and, in senior NCPD roles, promoted reforms to combat domestic violence, improve traffic safety, and strengthen accountability.
Above all, Steve cherished his family. An avid traveler and tomato gardener, he loved hosting barbecues with his wife, Jean, raising koi, cruising, vacationing in Hawaii, and watching his grandsons swim in the family pool. He was a devoted husband, father, and father-in-law, and to his grandsons, he was simply Papa. His family adored his generosity, kind heart, and unwavering support. He will always be their hero.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; sons, Scott and James, and their wives, Kyipyar and Lisa; daughter, Catherine, and her husband, Richard; stepson, Mark; brothers, Frank, John, and Eddie; sister, Eileen; and grandsons, Luca, Maverick, Mason, Cole, and Theodore. He was predeceased by his brother, Billy, and sister, Bette.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 20, from 2–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m., and Wednesday, October 21, from 5–8 p.m. at Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, 293 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, October 22, at 10:45 a.m. at Saint Dominic’s Church, 93 Anstice Street, Oyster Bay, New York. Interment to follow St. Charles Resurrection Cemetery, Farmingdale.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in Steve’s honor to the Fight for Firefighters Foundation.
