Obituary

Robert E. Mitchell, 90, passed away October 8, 2019, after a brief stay in hospice. Born June 14, 1929, in Port Washington, New York, he was the son of the late Everett and Alice (Fay) Mitchell.  Robert was pre-deceased by his beloved wife Anne (Nordquist) Mitchell and his cherished daughter, Anne Coneys.  He is survived by his daughter Maura Mitchell Kelly (Jim), his son, Michael Mitchell (Holly), his son in law, Kevin Coneys and his grandchildren, Lucie Coneys Hossfeld (Willet), Kevin Coneys, John Kelly, Michael Kelly, Erin Kelly and Grace Kelly as well as numerous cousins.Robert grew up in Port Washington attending Main Street School and Port Washington High school, where he was a key member of the track and field team and participated in national band competitions before graduating in 1947. He attended Webb Institute of Naval Architecture in Glen Cove, where he helped start the sailing team before matriculating to the University of Michigan in 1949. There he joined Theta Xi fraternity, graduating with a B.S. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering in 1951. After college, Robert went to the Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport, RI before being posted to the Bureau of Ships in New Orleans, LA as an Ensign, eventually achieving rank as a Lieutenant. He served in the US Navy Reserve until 1965.After the Navy, Robert attended Loyola University of the South Law School and Georgetown Law School in Washington, DC, where he was a member of Delta Theta Phi before graduating in 1956 and joining the law firm of Sullivan and Cromwell in Manhattan. He was a legal advisor at Lambert & Company investments before forming the firm of Campbell & Mitchell with David Campbell in Manhasset, NY. Robert joined the textile corporation JP Stevens as General Counsel, and retired after the company was sold in 1988.Robert's passion was his family and sailing. He met Anne (Nanci) while they were both sailing at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club (MBYC). They were married on November 2, 1957. Robert was one of the earliest members at MBYC and his contributions were vast. Beginning in 1962, he was Chairman of the Frostbite Dinghy Fleet, eventually becoming the youngest Commodore of the club at age 42. He was a valued trustee for many years and remained a member until his passing. Among his many contributions, he founded both the Commodore's Ball and the Blue Water Ball, was chairman of the Regatta Committee implemented a number of capital improvement projects. He and Nanci were involved with the Race Committee for over 60 years. Robert sailed in the Block Island, Vineyard and Edlu races as well as four Bermuda Races, the Annapolis Newport Race, the Halifax Race, as well as many Little Gull, Falkner Island and Orient Trophy races. Robert also enjoyed membership at the New York Yacht Club, the Shelter Island Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club. He was a highly regarded celestial navigator who could adeptly handle a sextant, earning him the nicknames "Pinpoint" and "Jupiter."After Robert's retirement in 1988, he and Nanci moved to Peconic, NY where they enjoyed over 20 years living on a small inlet off of Peconic Bay, and where Robert remained active on the Race Committee at Shelter Island Yacht Club until 2009. He and Nanci traveled extensively with favorite trips to Western Europe. Robert moved to Oyster Bay, NY in 2016 where he resided until his passing.  A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 12 at St. Dominic Catholic Church.
