Obituary

In Loving Memory of Peter DiGennaro Jr.

Peter DiGennaro Jr. passed away peacefully on October 12, 2026, surrounded by his devoted family, following a long and courageous battle with leukemia.

Peter was a man defined by his devotion to his family, his lifelong passion for music, and his joyful, quick-witted sense of humor. A loving husband and devoted father, he is survived by his loving wife, Cathy, his cherished daughter, Katie (Keith)—both of whom were the light of his life—and his dear brother, Bob (Dorina), nephew Vincent, and niece Arianna). Peter always made sure his family was deeply cared for, protecting and supporting them in every way possible.

Peter’s journey in music and education was marked by dedication and excellence. A graduate of Oyster Bay High School, he went on to earn an Associate degree in Music/Performing Arts from Nassau Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Music from SUNY Potsdam, and a Master of Arts from Hofstra University. Driven to make an even greater impact, he completed his academic path at LIU Post, earning a Master’s in Educational Administration.

For over 30 years, Peter shared his love for music as an elementary school band teacher in the Half Hollow Hills CSD, inspiring generations of young musicians. He was an active and respected member of the Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association (SCMEA) and was honored for his accomplishments with inclusion in the 2008–2009 Strathmore’s Who’s Who. Off the school grounds, Peter’s passion for performing shone bright as a musician playing saxophone in the band Depoe and the Elmont's.

Beyond his professional life, Peter brought warmth, laughter, and light wherever he went. He loved to joke around, enjoyed hitting the lanes for a game of bowling, and had a wonderful charisma—no matter where he went, he always seemed to run into someone he knew. He treasured escaping to their vacation home in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where he created countless fond memories with family and friends. Peter also found great pleasure in good food, wonderful company, and a glass of Pinot Grigio, especially during frequent visits to his favorite restaurant, Buona Sera. An avid sports fan, Peter was a loyal follower of the New York Yankees and rarely missed a game. He also held a soft spot for animals, sharing a special bond with the family cat, Lily, and his family horse, Shalako.

Peter’s warmth, humor, and unwavering love for his family and community will be forever remembered and missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
