The Grace family would like to share the news that our mother, Nancy Erskine Grace Hussey, passed away peacefully at her home on November 26th at the age of 99. She was lovingly surrounded by her devoted family and caregivers in her final days. Nancy was born in Pontiac, Michigan on September 8, 1922. She was the daughter of
Howard Major Erskine and Agnes Weir Erskine. She grew up in Bronxville, NY and graduated from Pine Manor Junior College. Nancy enlisted in the US Coast Guard in January 1942. Her outstanding leadership skills were of great service to our nation during WWII. When she enlisted, she was immediately selected to lead other recruits, first as Company Commander and then as one of the first two female Coxswains in the history of the US Coast Guard.
Nancy was married to the late David Ralph Grace in 1944 (both took service leave), and the late George Hussey Jr. in 1977. She is survived by daughters Nancy Terrell Grace, Caroline Grace Casler, and Margaret Lodes Gale, and her sons David Richard Grace (Barry), and Howard Eden Grace (Debbie), stepdaughter Priscilla Worrall (Jim), stepson Peter Hussey (Claire), and the late Deborah Frankovitch. Nancy is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 4 step grandchildren and 5 step great grandchildren.
In her community, Nancy will be remembered for giving her time and energy so generously as Founder and past President of the Junior League of Long Island as well as her Board service to the Matinecock Garden Club, the North Country Garden Club, Bailey Arboretum, the Hobe Sound Nature Conservancy (FL) and the Fernwood Botanical Gardens (Niles, MI). She was also a passionate horticulturist tending to her multiple orchid-filled greenhouses, and she had a weekly segment on WNIL in Niles, MI fielding calls from that community on their gardening questions.
As is her way, she was never in doubt on how to answer every question. Her infectious enthusiasm for dancing, dating (mainly teenage years), cookouts and picnics, entertaining, gardening, birds, family vacations, beach adventures, and all of nature's gifts has extended to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as to all those who knew her.
Due to recent developments with Covid19 Nancy's services have been postponed until a later date.
