Obituary

Mrs. Elizabeth Carlisle Lewis LEWIS, Elizabeth (Betty) Mae Carlisle, 91, of Oyster Bay. Long time teacher in Oyster Bay Public Schools. Beloved wife of late Ralph S. Lewis, loving mother of Richard S. (Janet) of Manhattan and Ralph C. (Cheryl) of Northport and much loved grandmother of Ralph S. and Elizabeth A of Northport. Also survived by many nephews and a niece. Born in Plattsburg, NY, Feb. 20, 1916. Graduate of Maryville College in Tennessee, 1937. Her first job was teaching grades 1-8 in a one-room schoolhouse in Morrisville/Stowe, VT in the 1939. After teaching for a year in Delhi, NY, she came to Oyster Bay in 1941 to teach at what is now the Mabel Fox Elementary School in East Norwich. After marrying Ralph S. Lewis in 1942, she continued to teach until the birth of her children. As they grew, she later was a substitute teacher in Oyster Bay and returned to full time teaching in 1958. She enhanced the lives of hundreds of fourth graders, teaching them everything from looking at the stars to leading them on an annual march to Theodore Roosevelt's grave on his birthday. She retired in 1978 and became the first Roosevelt School teacher to have a tree planted in her honor in front of the school. She was a faithful member of St. Paul's Methodist Church in Oyster Bay for many years and later joined the First Presbyterian Church of Oyster Bay. She was active in the Ecumenical Council of Oyster Bay. She lived her life as instructed in Hebrews 13, from "welcome strangers in your homes, as you may be entertaining angels unaware"...to..."remember those in prison, as though you were in prison with them." Her home and heart were always open to all, and she fulfilled the last and the hardest by teaching in prison and hearing the doors lock behind her. Funeral Information Visiting at the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home Inc. 293 South Street Oyster Bay Friday 3-5, 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service Saturday 11:00 a.m. at The First Presbyterian Church E. Main Street Oyster Bay. The scholarship was created on their 50th wedding anniversary and has already helped over 15 compassionate young people get started with their college.
