Obituary

Martha Bennett (née DeVito), aged 97 of Spring Hill, FL, formerly of Elmont,

NY, passed away peacefully on April 25, 2026. Born on November 4, 1928, in

the Bronx, New York, Martha lived a long and fulfilling life marked by her

devotion to family, faith, and cherished pastimes.

Martha was the beloved daughter of Francesco and Martha DeVito and grew

up alongside her brothers Dominick, Rocco, and William DeVito, all of whom

predeceased her. The family then moved from The Bronx to Jamaica, New

York where they started a Live Poultry Business that exists to this day. Her

parents and brothers worked seven days a week and made it a successful

enterprise, employing many young people in the neighborhood, lifting up

many surrounding families. Martha carried the values instilled by her parents

throughout her life and remained deeply connected to her roots.

Martha married Lawrence Bennett in 1952 and moved into their home in

Elmont, NY where they raised their four children, Elvira, Martha, Robert and

Eileen. She and Larry brought her mother into their home to care for her and

did so until Grandma passed at the age of 99. Together, she and Larry found

immense joy in traveling, exploring new places and creating countless

memories that they treasured dearly. They also delighted in playing poker with

friends and Mah Jongg with her girlfriends—activities that brought laughter

and camaraderie into her days.

As her children married and her family grew, she delighted in the birth of her

grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was at the heart of Martha’s

world. She survived by her children: Elvira Sullivan, Martha Cappellano,

Robert Bennett and his wife Eileen and Eileen Walters and husband Scott. Her

legacy lives on through her many grandchildren: Richard Smith and his wife

Tabatha Smith, Thomas Cappellano and his wife Christina, Danielle Bennett

and her husband David Goodman, Grant Hand, Luke Cappellano and his wife

Angeline, and Michelle Bennett. She also adored her great-grandchildren

Gabriella Smith, Tessa Cappellano, Leila Cappellano, Gabriel Goodman and

Pia Cappellano. Martha loved being surrounded by family; their presence

brought light to her life and filled her home with warmth.

A devout Roman Catholic, Martha’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. Her

spiritual foundation guided her through life’s joys and challenges and provided

a source of strength for those around her.

Martha’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her. May the love she

shared continue to inspire those she leaves behind. A Viewing will be held on

Thursday, April 30th, 2026, from 04:00 PM to 07:00 PM at Francis P DeVine

Funeral Home, Inc. 293 South St, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. Memorial Service at

Funeral Home Friday, May 1 st at 9:30 a.m.. Interment to follow at St. John’s

Memorial Cemetery 1704 NY-25A, Syosset, NY11791.
