IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Man-Lim
Yu
May 5, 1938 – December 27, 2023
Man-Lim "Manny" Yu, age 84, passed away on December 27, 2023. He was predeceased by his wife Selina Tai-Pang Yu. He is survived by his one son, York-Sung Yu, and three grandchildren, Vanessa, Michelle, and Olivia Yu. He is also survived by his brother and four sisters.
On paper, Man-Lim was born on May 5,1938, but when asked by his family, the answer persisted as, "Oh, I don't know, don't worry about it." Celebrating his birthday according to the Lunar Calendar, he never failed to keep his birthday date unrevealed. Some called it a sense of selflessness or perhaps even stubbornness, but it always led to the same outcome... two birthday celebrations.
Raised in Victoria Peak, Hong Kong by his father Chai Chuen Yu and mother Sau Lai Yu, Man-Lim's adolescent years consisted of playing soccer (with a notable captain status) and swimming across the harbor with his older brother John. Stories of swimming to Jumbo with occasional "shark" encounters reliably led to another classic tale of eating infamous but delectable shark-fin soup. Aside from his active lifestyle, Man-Lim excelled in his academics and graduated from Ying Wah College in 1958 and later attended New York University. During his undergraduate years at NYU from 1958 – 1962, he proudly founded and served as the President of the Chinese Student Society and met his beloved wife, Selina Wong. Emerging from the typical "can I borrow a pencil" clichè came forth a marriage in 1964 and birth to one son in Manhattan, New York. With a newfound love for "the best city in the world", Man-Lim and Selina named their first son York-Sung meaning "Born in New York." In succeeding years, Man-Lim and his older brother John pioneered the path for their family, helping them move from Hong Kong to New York where they have resided ever since.
Man-Lim received his Master of Science in 1965 and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 1968 from NYU, delivering his dissertation, "A Study on the Growth Inhibiting Factors of Zebrafish, Brachydanio Rerio, and Blue Gourami, Trichogaster Trichopterus." Soon after, he joined Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in 1969 as a Biology Professor. During his time at BMCC, Man-Lim served as department chair from 1971 – 1980, conferred the "best office in the whole building (with a high-rise view of the Hudson River), and made life-long friendships with fellow colleagues. After 49 years in the Science department, Man-Lim retired from BMCC in August of 2018. Subsequent days consisted of quizzing his granddaughters with biology questions, "Do you know how oxygen is made?" or "What's the most important organelle in the body?" He was the quintessential professor – his passion for teaching fulfilled his everyday life, extending far beyond his active career.
Living by his old Chinese saying, "sometime luck, sometime no luck," Man-Lim was a cancer, heart failure, 9/11, and car accident survivor. His return to health was a testament of his unwavering resolve and love for life. With his own strong-minded and resolute nature, he never stopped fighting amidst a battle... especially when it came to paying the restaurant bill.
Man-Lim lived in Oyster Bay, NY since 1971, where he raised his son and enjoyed fishing in his free time. During his "I'm not old, I'm just more mature" years of life, Man-Lim enjoyed watching movies with his wife Selina at the local Regal Cinema, stopping by Wendy's to get a Jr. bacon cheeseburger and senior diet coke for lunch, and spoiling his granddaughters. Ideas of home cooked meals were met with characteristic resistance and a "c'mon, let's just go out to eat" which led to many restaurant adventures and a cold beer (or his favorite scotch) with his family.
Man-Lim is beloved by many family members and dear friends who will miss him tremendously. He will forever be in our hearts guiding us in this journey called life. Dad, Gong Gong, may you rest in peace and happiness, we love you always.
