On Sunday 11/8/2020, Kenneth John Cooper, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend passed away at the age of 95.He was born October 3, 1925, in New York City to Lawrence and Marie (Donnelly) Cooper.Kenneth grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Erasmus High School in 1944 after which he entered the military during WWII.He served as a Corporal in the Army Air Force from 1944-1946. He was trained as an aerial gunner on B24 and B29 Bombers.After the war, Kenneth attended St. John's University and graduated in June 1949 with a BA in Marketing. He began working at Abraham and Strauss department store in Brooklyn, NY. He spent most of his career there as the Buyer of Major Appliances. He attended graduate school at NYU from 1949-1951. On August 23rd, 1952, he married June Bovaird. They lived in Brooklyn Heights, Bethpage, and then Oyster Bay Cove. They raised four children, Ken, Karen, Lauren, and Keelin. Kenneth and his family were active parishioners in St. Dominic's for many years. Kenneth retired from Abraham and Strauss after 50 years and opened The Antiques Center of Sheffield in the Berkshires. He had a passion for collecting.After selling their home in Oyster Bay, Kenneth and June made their final move to their home in Sheffield, MA.Kenneth loved to speak about his Irish heritage and never missed an opportunity to tell stories.He was very proud of his children and grandchildren and their many accomplishments.He enjoyed sweets and chocolate egg creams.He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence, mother Marie, sister Dorothy Simpson, and wife June.Kenneth is survived by his four children Kenneth Cooper, Karen Cooper, Lauren Eldridge, Keelin Hutzley, his four grandchildren, Samantha and Ian Cooper and Ryan and Gage Hutzley and great-grandaughter Lauren Riter.
Family will receive friends at the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home 293 South St Oyster Bay, NY on Thursday November 12, 2020 from 5pm-7pm. Mass of Christian burial will be Friday November 13, 2020 at 10am at the Chapel of St Dominic Church 93 Anstice St Oyster Bay, NY. Interment to follow with Military Honors at Calverton National Cemetery.
