In Loving Memory of
Joan Marie Knobel
August 24, 1931 - December 12, 2024
New York - Joan Marie Knobel, age 93, passed away on Thursday December 12, 2024, at (Hospice Care). She was born on August 24, 1931, at the Sanatorium, in Floral Park N.Y., the daughter of Henry George Mueller and Margaret Lillian Reilly. Joan graduated from Garden City (N.Y.) High School and Berkley Secretarial School (N.Y.). She worked as a Secretary at Adelphi College in the Admissions Office. During this time Joan was able to take an extended vacation to travel throughout Europe with her aunt, uncle and a good friend. She developed a love for travel. Joan married Robert Knobel on May 24, 1959, at St Anne's Church in Garden City. This date was also the 40th wedding anniversary for her parents. Because her husband Bob was a NYC Policeman, working nontraditional hours, Joan was lucky enough to become a stay-at-home mom, who took an active role in her children's school, sporting, and social lives. Joan is to be commended for taking under her wing and building a loving home that included Bob's mother Bertha (Nanny) Knobel and his daughter, Margie. Bowling was a hobby that Joan enjoyed, and she was quite successful at it. In January1985, with all of her children having graduated High School, she and Bob retired to Swansboro North Carolina. It wasn't the easiest of places to get to, but boy did it end up being a special place for the two of them. They were very involved in their neighborhood community and at St Mildred's Catholic Church. Joan enjoyed playing the game "Tiles" with her church friends every Tuesday, had a standing Wednesday morning breakfast get together with neighborhood friends, and a monthly lunch with her "lunch bunch" friends. She worked closely with Bob at Knights of Columbus and St. Mildreds charities and with visiting sick parishioners.
Joan truly loved spending time with her family, especially summer vacations at the beach near their home in NC. She was an avid swimmer who loved to teach her grandkids how to jump and frolic in the waves. She was a keen reader and loved to play computer solitaire games. Above everything, Joan was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, friend, and one of the sweetest people this world has ever seen.
Joan is survived by her daughter Dianne Johnson, her sons Robert (Gina) Knobel, and Kenneth (Carolyn) Knobel; 8 grandchildren, Christopher Johnson, Dana Johnson, Danielle Johnson, Nicholas Knobel, Theodore Knobel, Lilly Knobel, Margaux Knobel, and Ellie Knobel; many nieces and nephews who she was able to visit with at the 2023 Mueller Reunion held in Wisconsin; Best friends Brian & Jeanne Daneker, Keith Johnson, and many other friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Bob Knobel; daughter Marjorie (Thomas) Knobel; sister Peggy (Jim) Dillingham; brothers Henry (Nancy) Mueller Jr. and Walter (Maddie) Mueller.
