IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Isabel Kelleher
Dye
October 12, 1925 – August 9, 2024
Isabel Kelleher Dye, 98, passed away peacefully on August 9 in Charleston, South Carolina, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in the Bronx, the eldest child of Thomas F. Kelleher and Isabelle Leary Kelleher, and grew up in Richmond Hill, Queens with her five siblings. During her senior year at Cathedral High School in Manhattan, when the U.S. was drawn into World War II, she decided to become an Army Nurse to aid the war effort. She graduated from St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Manhattan in 1947, where she also worked for several years as a Registered Nurse.
Isabel married James William Dye Jr., an Air Force veteran and electrical engineer, in 1949, and they raised eight children, moving from Bethpage to Oyster Bay in 1964. She suffered the loss of her son James in 1971 in an accident, and the death of her husband James in 1987 to illness. Despite these losses, Isabel remained positive and joyful throughout her life. She inspired and comforted all who knew her with her loving presence.
Isabel read avidly and enjoyed traveling with her siblings, friends, children, and grandchildren, who she credited with keeping her young and "broadening her horizons." Isabel's faith in God was central to her life, and she was an active parishioner at St. Dominic Catholic Church for more than 50 years. She especially enjoyed teaching religious education to young children. She also served on the Family Advisory Board at Pilgrim Psychiatric Center, where she advocated for mental health patients.
Isabel was predeceased by her husband James, her son James, and her siblings Thomas Kelleher, Marilyn Henderson, John Kelleher, Margie Shea and Robert Kelleher. She is lovingly remembered by her children Ellen Sack, Patrice Gleason, Thomas Dye, Kevin Dye, Chris Dye, Margaret Dye, and Richard Dye, as well as their spouses, her twenty-five grandchildren and
great-grandchildren, and her many nieces and nephews.
Family members will receive friends at the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home, 293 South Street, Oyster Bay, NY, on Friday, September 20 from 7:00-9:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday September 21 at 10:00 AM at the Chapel of St. Dominic Church in Oyster Bay, NY.
For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Isabel K. Dye to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).
