IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Helen
Gicas
January 14, 1927 – October 29, 2022
Helen Gicas passed away peacefully at home on October 29,2022 at the age of 95 surrounded by her family. Helen was born in Manhattan on January 14,1927 and was the only surviving child of Efthalia (Koschemone) and CostasDekohtouris, both of whom immigrated to the United States from Kozani, Greece. She was raised in Manhattan and Astoria and grew up with extended family, including her cousins Helen and Melpomene Michalopoulos, whom she considered sisters. She married Gregory Gicas in 1944 and was a devoted wife to him until his death. Together, Helen and Greg raised three daughters, Johanna Jones, Efthalia Morgan, and Constantina O'Neill, owned two fur shops, Bay Shore Furs and Marcy Furs, and were active members of the St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church. They lived in Syosset for 40 years and
retired to Fort Myers Beach, Florida in 1987. Following Greg's passing in1990, Helen lived with her daughter Constantina and her husband David, helping raise their three children and moving with the family to Colorado in1993.
Helen was a woman with many interests, but family was always first andforemost. She loved each of her daughters dearly and cared deeply about her 7grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren to whom she was known as "Gigi."
Helen was sharp-witted and never lost her ability to see things clearly, even when her vision was impacted by macular degeneration later in life. "Keep up with the times or get left behind," she told her family – and keep up with the times she did. She dressed impeccably, went everywhere, remembered everything, and charmed everyone.
Her family will deeply miss their matriarch's love, guidance, and sense of humor, but is eternally grateful for so many wonderful years with her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Shrine Church, 1 Shrine Place, Greenlawn, NY 11740.
