Gloria Murray Hanrahan
02/20/1927 – 08/01/2020
Born in the Bronx to Mabel Thompson and Francis Murray on February 20 th in the year of the first talking motion picture (1927), Gloria was the youngest of their three children. Her brother, Milton, and sister, Mary (Foley), preceded her by 12 + years. Her mother passed away before she turned two and when her father remarried years later she gained a step-sister, Irene, and a half-sister, Joan Elizabeth Murray.
Gloria attended Saint Raymond's Elementary School on Tremont Avenue in the Bronx followed by Cathedral High School in NYC. She worked part-time at Lord and Taylor's flagship store on
Fifth Avenue, then, after graduating, worked full time as an operator at AT&T. She met Jere (Jeremiah James Hanrahan) at a "welcome back" dance for WWII veterans at Fordham
University in 1945. She always said "his jokes were corny but he was a good dancer". They married on June 19 th 1948 at Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Church on University Avenue in the
Bronx. They soon moved out to Long Island and had three children – Christine Elizabeth (Goggin), Jeanne Marie, and Jerelyn Mary.
Gloria was an active member of the Mercy League and volunteered at Winthrop University Hospital for many years where she especially enjoyed wheeling the new Mom's out of the maternity ward with their newborns. She was also a U.S. Census taker in the early '60s on the
north shore of Long Island in the days when Census takers primarily went door to door. In 1968 she aced the civil service test and was hired by Oyster Bay Library. She enjoyed working there
for over 20 years and took on the role of Union representative for the last several years. Gloria and her beloved husband, Jere who passed away in 2007, always had an active social life and made many lasting friends. They had a wonderful life together. They shared a love of
baseball and, luckily, they were both Yankee fans. She knew all the players and could talk baseball strategy with the best of them. Her father played in the minor leagues when she was a
child and took her to all the games. An avid reader and devoted Jeopardy fan, Gloria was also the family Trivial Pursuit champ.
Everyone wanted to be on her team. She will be missed. Gloria is survived by her three daughters, Christine Goggin, Jeanne Hanrahan, Jerelyn Hanrahan; two son-in-laws, Barry Goggin and Alan Kudisch; four grandchildren, Matthew Hawley, Georgia Doremus, Thomas
Doremus and Fiona Brunner; two grand-daughters-in-law, Anna Hawley and Jennifer Hawley; and four great-great grandchildren, Matthew Hawley, Jr., Julianna Hawley, Cameron Hawley
and Derek Hawley. And many nieces and nephews. John Hawley (Jay), a beloved grandson, and ardent Yankee fan, passed away in 2013.
