Elizabeth Anne Ruthkowski passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026, at the age of 85, surrounded by family.
Liz was born on April 20, 1941, in Flushing, New York, to Matilda Hassler and Joseph Hassler. She graduated from Port Washington High School and attended secretarial school
She started her career at Saint Francis Hospital and worked at British Industries Corporation in Port Washington, where she met Adam, her husband of 58 years. They lived in Oyster Bay, where they later started a family business, South Street Service, and raised their family. Later in life, they moved to Southold, where they have resided for 26 years.
Through her work and personal life, she built a reputation as a woman who was admired for her strength, patience, dedication, and love of family. She had a quiet yet strong and loving presence in the lives of her family members.
Liz’s commitment to putting others' needs before her own went far beyond their family business; kindness and generosity were the hallmarks of her character. Liz was an avid reader. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. Family was first and foremost to her; she was a devoted mother to her two children, Brian and Dennis, and grandmother to her seven grandchildren, Spencer, Austin, Leah, Jack, James, Abigail, and Colin.
She is survived by her brother, John Hassler, and his wife, Gerri, and her brother-in-law, William Miano, and she was preceded in passing by her sister, Barbara Milano.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 pm on Friday, October 9th at Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home at 293 South Street, Oyster Bay, New York, followed by Funeral Mass on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Dominic’s Chapel at 93 Anstice Street in Oyster Bay, New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family would be grateful for donations in her honor to be made to American Cancer Society
