Daniel Kenneth MacDonald July 25, 1927 - April 20, 2020
Daniel Kenneth MacDonald ("Doonee") passed away peacefully on April 20, 2020 at Harbor House Assisted Living in Oyster Bay, NY, surrounded by the wonderful and loving staff who have cared for him for the last four years of his life. Dan was predeceased by his wife, Ann MacDonald (nee Mulligan) on September 25, 1999. He is survived by his five daughters, Kathleen Stubing, Karen Navin, Jo-Ann Ruane (Thomas), Jeanne MacDonald (Diane Trinkaus), and Patricia Phillips, and his nine grandchildren, Daniel Olejnik (Lauren), Kathryn Stubing, Kelly Navin (Randy Rice), Patricia Ruane, Sean Ruane, Claire Ruane, Colleen Ruane, Victoria Phillips, and Andrew Phillips. Dan is also survived by his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews, who brought much joy to his life! Dan was born on July 25, 1927 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and was raised in Manhattan, NY. He attended Holy Trinity Elementary School and Xavier High School. Dan served in the US Army from 1945 through 1947, after which he began his career with the New York Telephone Company. In 1951, Dan married the love of his life, Ann Mulligan, and they started their family the following year. He retired in 1985 to travel overseas with Ann before settling down to do what he loved most: spending time with his children and grandchildren. The most valuable lesson he taught his family was that "you always have to have a sense of humor!" As long-time residents of Freeport, NY, Dan and Ann spent countless hours scouring area garage sales in search of broken clocks and watches, which Dan then repaired, restored, and refurbished. For many years, Dan donated hundreds of watches to local charities, including the Salvation Army and the VA, and he also gave countless watches to family, friends, and neighbors. Dan loved to play cards; family games of Crazy 8s, with "Doonee rules" added, were always fun, but his all-time favorite was Cribbage, a game that reflected his Canadian roots. Dan's family would like to extend heartfelt appreciation to our extended family and friends for all their love and support! Due to current health concerns we are not able to have any public funeral services at this time, but a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
