Charles A. O'Connor, age 94 of East Norwich, New York, passed away on Saturday April 13,2019. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on September 29, 1924. Charlie was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Terese O'Connor. He is survived by his daughters Eileen Yu (Paul), and Carol Notine. His granddaughters Lauren (Chris), Dana, and Audrey. His sister, Barbara Molinari, sister-in-law Mary O'Connor, and his close friend James Watt.
Charles served in the United States Navy from 1941-1944. He was a Mechanical Engineer and inventor. He held several patents on the Multi-Pitch Propeller for outboard motors and the Spindle Wizard, which automated spindles on tool and die machines. He was at work om a system that would allow rowers to row in the direction they are facing.
Charlie was a Past Commodore of Sagamore Yacht Club, where he was an active member for 50 years. He loved boats and owned seven throughout his lifetime, working his way up to a classic 32 foot wooden cabin cruiser and eventually four racing sailboats. The math and strategy involved in successful racing was right up his alley. The family spent many wonderful days on the water near Oyster Bay.
Charlie was a kind and generous man with a great sense of humor and ever-present smile. He was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.Private services were held at the Francis P. DeVine Funeral Home Inc. He was interred with Military Honors at Calverton National Cemetery.
