Obituary for Alfred C. Hesse

HESSE- Alfred of Bayville NY on March 16 at 87 years of age passed after a courageous battle with cancer. Beloved husband of Margaret (Peggy), devoted father to CDR William F Hesse USN (Kathy) and loving Grandfather to Mary Katheryn and Patrick. Proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War with the Far East Command where he was GEN Mark Clark’s driver. He was a proud Ford Motor Company executive retiring after 42 years. Al was responsible for the unveiling of an American icon, The Ford Mustang, at the 1964 World’s Fair. Al tirelessly served his community in many ways. He became known to many as Coach Hesse as he coached the Marines of Bayville American Legion football league for several years leading them to the 1971 League Champs over Air Force. Al was also a long serving Trustee and Deputy Mayor for the Village of Bayville. Al was a 50-year member of the Robert H. Spittel 1285 American Legion post. He was also the head commentator for St. Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Church for 27 years. Al proudly considered himself a life long fan of The New York Football Giants having season tickets for over 55 years. He saw his first game in 1943 at the Polo Grounds and was present for many team milestones including the first two Super Bowl victories. He also enjoyed following the Mets and was in attendance for their 1986 World Series Victory. Al later was elected to serve on the Board of Directors for The School of Humanities and Social Science for The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. In later life he loved following the exploits of his Grandchildren and taking boat rides in the Long Island Sound aboard his boat, Irish Thunder. Family and Friends may visit Sunday, March 18, 2-4pm and 7-9pm, Monday March 19 2-4pm and 7-9pm at Francis Devine Funeral Home, Oyster Bay. A funeral mass with be held at St Gertrude RC, Bayville, at 11AM followed by internment at Locust Valley Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to THE CITADEL FOUNDATION 171 Moultrie Street Charleston, SC 29409
